Welcome to Hoxton Wealth, the new home of Hoxton Capital
Podcasts • Hoxton Life Ep20 Oliver Jaap
In the latest episode of the Hoxton Life Podcast, Sam Oakes chats with Oliver, a former helicopter pilot turned trainee financial planner, about his incredible journey. Spoiler: it’s all about ambition, adaptability, and putting in the work.
As a kid, Oliver dreamed of flying helicopters. By 19, he’d made it happen, training in Sydney and soaring over the iconic Harbour. But when COVID grounded his plans, he decided to pivot—and ended up in Dubai, swapping the cockpit for the dynamic world of financial planning.
Now in a trainee wealth manager role at Hoxton Wealth, Oliver is thriving by embracing every challenge. His days are focused on prospecting for new business—turning over stones, building relationships, and learning the ropes of what makes a successful financial planner.
And he’s not rushing. Despite studying for his Series 65 exam, Oliver is focused on mastering his current role before stepping up. “You can’t skip the reps,” he says. “It’s about doing the hard work now, so when the time comes to transition to an advisor role, it feels natural.”
Here’s the twist: Oliver loves what many people dread. Prospecting for new business—making calls, connecting with leads, and building relationships—is his favorite part of the job.
Oliver’s approach to learning and growth isn’t just about himself. As a team leader, he’s mentoring others in the trainee role, helping them navigate the challenges and stay on track.
And it’s not just his colleagues who benefit—his 18-year-old brother has joined the Hoxton team and is already making waves (no pun intended). In his first few weeks, he’s booked more appointments than anyone else, driven by Oliver’s guidance and their shared ethos of putting in the hours.
Outside of work, Oliver keeps his adventurous spirit alive. On the rare days when Dubai has waves, he’s out surfing at sunrise. And when the surf isn’t cooperating, he’s planning trips to Bali or hitting up the world’s largest inland wave pool at Surf Abu Dhabi.
His love for classic cars also keeps him motivated. “I’ve always set goals around cars,” he says.
For Oliver, the trainee role isn’t a stepping stone to rush through—it’s the foundation for long-term success.
With Hoxton’s structured pathway and supportive environment, Oliver sees this as the perfect place to grow. “By the time I’m ready to step up, I’ll have the knowledge, skills, and confidence to hit the ground running.”
Thinking about starting a career in financial planning? Oliver’s story proves that with ambition, patience, and the right mindset, you can build something extraordinary.
