Investing Across the US & UK: What US Citizens Need to Know

Webinars • Investing Across the US & UK: What US Citizens Need to Know

  • Investments

Living in the UK as a US citizen can mean that the investments you already hold need to be considered under two sets of rules. A US account can still have UK tax consequences, while a UK account or investment can have US tax and reporting implications.

In this webinar, experts from Hoxton Wealth and Canaccord Wealth looked at the questions that matter when your financial life spans both countries. We discussed how investment accounts, wrappers, funds and ETFs can be treated across the US and UK, and why the right approach depends on more than where an account is held.

We also looked at how your expected time in the UK can affect the planning conversation. Someone on a short-term assignment may have different considerations from someone building a long-term life in the UK. Once the cross-border position is understood, investment fundamentals such as diversification, currency exposure, risk and long-term goals still need to remain part of the decision.

What we covered

  • Why US and UK rules can apply to the same financial life
  • How both the investment wrapper and the underlying investment can affect the cross-border position
  • What to consider when holding UK and US funds, ETFs, ISAs, 529 plans and pensions
  • Why the length of time you expect to remain in the UK can change the planning approach
  • The UK's four-year Foreign Income and Gains regime and the Temporary Repatriation Facility
  • How diversification, currency exposure and long-term objectives fit into cross-border investment planning

Whether you have recently moved to the UK, have lived here for several years or are still unsure how long you will stay, this session will help you understand what to review before opening new accounts, changing existing investments or making longer-term decisions.

Our Speakers

George Stainton

Senior Wealth Planner

I started my career working for Kent Police in the investigations department in 2010 but unfortunately during a period of public spending cuts, I realized this was not the place to build a career. Having always had an interest in financial services and been very good with numbers, I then started my career in the finance world in the City of London in 2011, where worked for an investment management company as a Trainee Investment Adviser. I spent 3 years studying and learning the ropes in the UK, where I completed the Investment Advice Diploma. During my time as an adviser in the UK, I specialised in advising on various investments within ISA and pension portfolios. Since moving overseas in 2017, I have continued to build my qualifications and experience, and I now offer a holistic range of financial advice to expats all over the world.
